Prayas Ray Barman, a little known leg-spinner from Bengal, made a big splash on the IPL scene after being picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for ₹1.5 crore in the player auction on Tuesday. Barman made his senior List-A debut for Bengal in September and picked up four for 20 in his first appearance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (One-dayers) against Jammu and Kashmir.
The 16-year-old’s exploits in the Bengal under-17 and under-19 teams are not well documented, but he caught the eye of the State selectors for being a good wrist-spinner and made his way to the senior team.
“I had no hope about any franchise bidding for me in IPL player auction. It is like a dream come true when I was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore,” Barman told reporters after news of his selection spread around.
“Despite the fact that I am a leg-spinner, my greatest cricket hero is Virat Kohli. It is great to think that I will be sharing the dressing room with the Indian captain,” said the excited youngster.
