More than 100 people sought medical attention in connection with summer heat-related health conditions in the State on Wednesday.
Two cases of sunstroke were reported in Thiruvananthapuram and 46 cases of sunburn from 12 districts. In all, 54 people approached hospitals for treatment for heat rash, the Health Department said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that above-normal day temperatures should be expected till Friday in 13 districts in the State.
With the summer heat expected to persist, the Health Department has launched measures to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
An alert has been issued to district medical officers in this regard, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja said adding the use of clean water, to a large extent, could prevent diseases from spreading.
The rescheduled working hours regulating outdoor labour between 12 noon and 3 p.m. should be strictly followed.
The Food Safety Commissionerate had also launched inspections on roadside juice shops to make sure that clean water is used, the Health Minister said.
Meanwhile, the IMD said on Wednesday that its summer heat alert would be valid till Friday.
As many as 13 districts in the State were likely to experience an increase of two to three degrees Celsius in daytime temperatures till Friday, according to the IMD.
The heat alert issued is valid for Kollam, Kottayam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
Palakkad district recorded a maximum temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday while Kottayam district recorded 38.5 degrees Celsius and Vellanikkara (Thrissur), 37.1 degrees Celsius.
Daily power consumption crossed the 85 million unit (mu) mark for the first time in the State on Tuesday.
Consumption of power stood at 85.89 mu.
Of this, power imports from outside the State accounted for 59 mu, according to State Load Despatch Centre statistics.
Hydel dams in the State were 46% full on Tuesday, with a combined storage for generating 1,891.8 mu.
