Pinarayi wonders why the tantri called Mr. Pillai for legal counsel when the Devaswom had its own lawyer
The controversial speech of BJP State president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai has exposed his plan to make the Sabarimala tantri a part of his party’s agenda over the entry of women of all age groups to the temple, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.
Addressing a rally organised by the LDF here on Monday, Mr. Vijayan said the speech exposed the BJP’s plan to reap political advantage over the issue. It was for the tantri to make it clear whether he wanted to be part of the BJP’s agenda.
Referring to Mr. Pillai’s explanation that the tantri had called him to take legal opinion as a lawyer, the Chief Minister wondered why the tantri had called him when the Travancore Devaswom Board had its own lawyer. The speech naturally raised suspicions that the tantri had been part of the BJP’s strategy. The BJP leader’s response to the tantri’s question whether the threat to close the shrine if young women entered the temple would be contempt of court should also be taken seriously, he said.
The BJP could not hope to shake the secular mindset of the State with its agitation over the Sabarimala issue, he said reiterating that the government was committed to protecting devotees and executing the Supreme Court verdict on entry of women of all ages in the temple.
The Chief Minister also said that the Sangh Parivar was trying to create an impression that the LDF was against the devotees. The government was committed to protecting the interests of the believers and respecting the rights of non-believers, he said.
