Residents seek alternative arrangements for waste disposal
The city Corporation has taken steps to tackle large-scale dumping of waste into the Amayizhanjan canal near the Rajaji Nagar area.
The civic body authorities, who held a meeting with the representatives of residents from the area this week, has agreed to install aerobic bins for the locality, as the residents complained of lack of options to process waste.
“Women from the locality, who earlier used to collect waste as part of the Cleanwell company’s waste management operations here, are still collecting waste from various parts of the city and dumping it into the canal. Councillors and local people have been flagging this issue for sometime. Though a barrier was put up on either side of the canal to prevent dumping of waste, it has been cut open in some areas to dump waste,” said a Corporation official.
The waste dumped into the canal often gets collected downstream at Thampanoor, leading to water logging even after a light rain.
Now, the resident representatives have given an assurance that there will not be waste dumping any more, if alternative arrangements are provided by the Corporation. The civic body will be organising awareness campaigns on waste treatment at source in the locality.
The work on the installation of aerobic bins in the area will be taken up soon.
Action to be taken
After that, action will be taken against those who continue to dump waste into the canal.
Also, steps would be taken to ensure that waste collected from outside was not brought here, said the Corporation official.
