Coronavirus outbreak Updates: The number of active COVID-19 cases has risen to 81, the Ministry of Health confirmed on Friday. In an effort to evacuate Indians from affected countries, Air India is scheduled to send an aircraft to Milan on Saturday to bring back those stranded in the Italian city. The death toll in Italy due to coronavirus has crossed 1,000, putting the country at number two just behind China.
India recorded its first case of coronavirus death yesterday with health officials confirming that a 76-year-old man, who died on his way from Hyderabad to his hometown Karnataka’s Kalaburagi, Tuesday tested positive for the virus. Previously, three persons, who had tested positive in Kerala, had recovered and were discharged from hospitals.
On Friday afternoon, an Iran Air flight carrying 44 Indians stranded in coronavirus-hit Iran, landed at the airport in Mumbai, said Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar. This is the second such evacuation by the initiated by the Indian government from Iran. Last week, a batch of 58 Indian was brought back on Saturday. As of Thursday, over 6,000 Indians were stranded in various provinces of Iran.
Earlier in the day, the Delhi government decided to cancel all sporting events, including IPL matches, in the city after the government shut schools, colleges as well as cinema halls till March 31 on Thursday. Around the globe, Covid-19 cases reached near 130,000. In Italy, the death toll touched 1,016, second behind China.
