Congress will do everything to ensure justice to them, says Rahul Gandhi
Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the houses of slain Youth Congress workers Kripesh and Sarath Lal here on Thursday provided more than a healing touch to the bereaved families still struggling to come out of the trauma since the twin murders here on February 17.
Mr. Gandhi, who paid a visit to the families that live about half a km apart, told them that the Congress would do everything to ensure justice to them. In fact, he could witness the sorrow of a large number of local people, including women and children, who turned up at the houses to give vent to their grief.
The Congress president, accompanied by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Mullappally Ramachandran, Congress Working Committee member K.C. Venugopal, and party leader Mukul Wasnik, spent around 20 minutes each with the two grieving families. From the helipad of the Central University of Kerala at Periye here, he drove straight to the hut where Kripesh had lived with his parents and sister. Consoling the bereaved family, Mr. Gandhi said he would visit them again.
During his visit to the house of Sarath Lal, the Congress president told Sathyanarayanan, father of Sarath Lal, that if the Congress came to power, the investigation into the twin murders would be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“The Congress president’s visit is a great relief for us as he offered all help to ensure justice to us,” Mr. Sathynarayanan told reporters. The Congress would extend all legal support to the families, he said. Echoing the same sentiments, Kripesh’s father Krishnan said he was happy about the visit. Mr. Gandhi also saw the new 1,000-sq-ft house being built for Kripesh’s family near their hut. The ₹12-lakh house is a humanitarian initiative supported by Hibi Eaden, MLA.
A joint memorandum of Kripesh’s sister Krishnapriya and Sarath Lal’s sister Amrutha to Mr. Gandhi called for a CBI probe into the murders. Earlier, the Congress president also met the family of slain Youth Congress workers S.P. Shuhaib at the Kannur airport.
