I am a final year student of B.Sc. Chemistry and am very much interested in M.Sc. Food Technology course as a higher study option. Food technology is the application of food science in manufacturing food products. Processes in the food industry involve the practical application of the principles of several disciplines of science for the manufacture or production, preservation, processing, handling and packaging of food materials. The key person in any food processing industry is the food technologist who controls and supervises the production of processed foods. There are plenty of job opportunities in this field. It also offers different specialisation such as fruit and vegetable processing, cereal technology, oil seeds technology, food chemistry, food microbiology, post – harvest technology, animal products technology and developing of food processing machinery.Master’s in Food Science/Technology are open to meritorious B.Sc. holders in Chemistry, Agriculture, Food Technology, Home Science, etc.

M.Sc. Food Technology

The Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore is a prominent institution under the Central Government that offers a two-year M.Sc. (Food Technology) degree course. This institute is affiliated to the University of Mysore. Entry qualification is Bachelor’s degree in Science with chemistry/biochemistry as one of the subjects or agriculture/ engineering/technology. The candidate should have studied mathematics as one of the subjects at the Plus Two/equivalent or degree level. Applicants should have obtained 55 per cent marks in optional subjects in the B.Sc. degree. SC / ST students require only 50 per cent marks. B.Sc. (Hons.) degree holders with 50 per cent marks (SC / ST 45 per cent marks) are also eligible. Job opportunities

Those who successfully complete M.Sc. or Ph.D. programmes in Food Technology are eligible to get good jobs in the food processing / manufacturing companies, food packaging industries, food research and analysis laboratories, Baby food manufacturing companies, catering department of railways, airlines etc. There are also self-employment opportunities. The Centre provides financial support to educated unemployed youth for setting up food manufacturing and preservation units. M.Sc. or Ph.D. holders are also eligible for lecturers’/teaching posts in academic field.

Allied subjects

Food science, nutrition and dietetics are inter-related. Food science applies to almost any scientific discipline dealing with the study of food while technological applications are the focus of food technology postgraduate programmes. Those who wish to become dieticians or nutritionists should study home science or dietetics and nutrition, food science/ technology course at the Masters Degree level.
